When His Brother Andrew Was Accused of Sexual Harassment, CNN Decided to Fire Anchor Chris Cuomo
Chris Cuomo has been fired by CNN days after the network suspended him for helping his brother, former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, navigate the murky waters of sexual harassment allegations.
On Saturday, CNN tweeted that he had been fired and that it was “effective immediately.”
In a statement, the network said that “Chris Cuomo was suspended earlier this week pending further evaluation of new information that came to light regarding his involvement with his brother’s defense.” To conduct the review, we hired a reputable law firm, which we’ve since fired.
Cuomo called the decision to terminate him “disappointing” in a Twitter post in response to his dismissal.
A special group of people who did important work will be missed, he said. “I owe them all a lot.”
Chris Cuomo used his media “sources” and “other journalists,” according to dozens of transcripts, video interviews, and text messages released Monday by the New York Attorney General’s Office, to investigate the allegations of sexual harassment leveled against his brother, the former governor of New York.
When asked why he helped his brother, he wrote, “This is not how I want my time at CNN to end but I have already told you why and how.” The team at Cuomo Prime Time and the work we did as CNN’s #1 show in the most competitive time slot have my utmost admiration and gratitude.
Newly-released Attorney General’s Office documents prompted a CNN “indefinite” suspension of the anchor on Tuesday. On his Sirius XM radio show on Wednesday, Cuomo talked about his suspension and called the disciplinary action taken against him “embarrassing.”
In order to get information on Andrew’s accusers, CNN’s Chris Cuomo turned to his media contacts.
“Even saying it makes my stomach hurt. It’s a shame. However, I can see where you’re coming from. Also, I can see why some people are upset with me because of what I did. When I say that I’m sorry, I really do mean it “In an interview with SiriusXM, Cuomo said as much. “It’s the last thing I ever wanted to do was compromise any of my colleagues and do anything but assist.” ”
“It’s embarrassing,” says Chris Cuomo of CNN’s decision to remove him after his brother Andrew was implicated in a scandal.
This week’s records show that Chris Cuomo was more involved in helping his brother than previously thought; he texted the governor’s aides and advisers and contacted other journalists about upcoming stories.
“Chris broke our rules when he admitted to us that he had given his brother’s staff advice, and we publicly acknowledged that. Because of his unique situation, we also appreciated and understood his need to put family before work, even if it meant putting his career on hold “His suspension was announced in a statement by CNN.
For eight years, CNN’s “Cuomo Prime Time” anchor had been a part of the network’s “New Day with Alisyn Camerota.” Since then, he has established himself as the network’s top-rated anchor with his own prime time show airing at 9 ET.
