Police in Pennsylvania says a 6-year-old boy shot and killed his 5-year-old brother on Monday night after they were left alone in a room with an unattended firearm, according to police.

At around 5:30 p.m., Allegheny County police arrived at a Penn Hills residence and found the boy with a single gunshot wound, according to a statement from the police department.

Once at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, the doctors found that he had passed away.

As stated in the statement, a gun that was unlocked and accessible to three children had been left in their room.

A six-year-old sibling may have accidentally shot the victim while handling an unsecured firearm in the home, according to a statement from investigators.

A parent legally owns the firearm, according to police, who said the parent is cooperating with the investigation.

The child was identified by the Allegheny County Medical Examiner as Connor Wolfe. The Penn Hills School District, where he went to kindergarten, announced on Tuesday that it would provide counselors for its students and employees.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Connor and his family at this difficult time,” the district said in a statement.
