Annually, the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (IIDEA) compiles a list of “backsliding” democracies, and this year the United States was included on the list for the first time.
The Stockholm-based organization uses 50 years of democratic indices to make its annual report. It divides around 160 countries into three categories: democracies, “backsliding” democracies, and “hybrid” governments.

While two-thirds of the world lives under a “hybrid” or authoritarian system, the survey stated that more than one in four people worldwide are currently living in an authoritarian rule.

According to the Global State of Democracy 2021 report, “This year we categorized the United States as backsliding, but our statistics suggest that the backsliding episode began at least in 2019.”

When former President Trump challenged the legitimacy of the 2020 U.S. election results, “a historic turning point” occurred, the report stated, referring to a campaign by Trump and his allies to overturn the 2020 U.S. election results, which culminated in Trump’s supporters storming the Capitol building on January 6, 2019.
State voting regulations “disproportionately harm minorities in a negative way,” according to the research, were also noted.
AFP reports that IDEA Secretary-General Kevin Casas-Zamora described the “visible weakening of democracy” in the United States as “one of the most alarming trends” in the 2021 report.

In the last decade, the number of democracies that had gone backward doubled, according to the research.
Members of the European Union such as Hungary, Poland, and Slovenia join “established democracies” like the United States.
Last year’s list included Ukraine and North Macedonia, but both countries were dropped after their circumstances improved.
Those countries that have seen the greatest erosion of democratic rights in the recent decade include Brazil, Nicaragua, Serbia, and Turkey.

Russia, Morocco, and Turkey are among the 20 “hybrid” states that make up 20 of the world’s 47 “authoritarian” regimes in 2020 according to the research.
COVID-19’s epidemic has exacerbated an already dangerous trend of democratic disintegration, according to the research.
Democracy has been violated by actions that are disproportionate or illegal or indefinite or unrelated to the nature of the emergency in nations such as Hungary and India, as well as the Philippines and the United States, it stated.
