Greys Anatomy Season 19: The longest-running medical drama series has already been renewed for a 19th season.
During the medical drama’s Season 18 winter holiday in January 2022, ABC made a surprising revelation that star Ellen Pompeo (Meredith Grey) and showrunner Krista Vernoff had signed new deals for Greys Anatomy Season 19, putting to rest fears that the series will finish in 2022.
Here’s what we know so far about Greys Anatomy Season 19 plot, cast, release date, and more!
Greys Anatomy Season 19 Expected Plot
Season 19 of Grey’s Anatomy will examine the ever-expanding world of modern medicine through the perspective of favorite returning and new characters, according to the network.
Of course, that broad phrase could be applied to any season of the show, so it doesn’t provide much insight into what to expect.
That’s reasonable, though, because Season 18 is still on the air, and if history is any indication, it’ll have a few surprises up its sleeve before Greys Anatomy Season 19 arrives.
Greys Anatomy Season 19, like Season 18, is expected to take place in a fictional post-COVID future.
After focusing largely on the coronavirus epidemic in Season 17, the series decided to depart from current events in Season 18.
We don’t know where Meredith and the other characters will be by the end of Season 18 because the season is still in progress.
Meredith is commuting to Minnesota to discover a new surgical therapy for Parkinson’s disease, supported by famous neurosurgeon David Hamilton(Peter Gallagher), as of the midway point of Season 18.
Amelia (Scorsone), her sister-in-law, and the new character Dr. Kai Bartley (E.R. Fightmaster) have supported her in her endeavors.
Moreover, Meredith has started dating transplant surgeon Nick while in Minnesota.

Grey’s Anatomy Season 19 Expected Cast
Fortunately, Deadline revealed in May that Ellen Pompeo and her fellow original cast members Chandra Wilson and James Pickens Jr. had signed new contracts with ABC, ensuring that they would all return.
While we’re on the subject of contracts, Kim Raver, Camilla Luddington, and Kevin McKidd are signed through season 19 on paper.
Original cast members Chandra Wilson (Dr. Miranda Bailey) and James Pickens Jr. (Dr. Richard Webber) have inked new multi-year contracts. They are set to return for Season 19 in May 2021, alongside Pompeo, who plays Dr. Meredith Grey.
Kim Raver (Dr. Teddy Altman), Camilla Luddington (Dr. Jo Wilson), and Kevin McKidd (Dr. Owen Hunt) all signed three-year contracts in 2019, which will keep them on the show until Season 19.
However, it doesn’t mean their characters will stick around for that long; Grey’s Anatomy is notorious for writing off characters who still have time left on their actors’ contracts.
With Owen’s fate still up in the air following the Season 18 mid-season finale, it’s unclear whether McKidd will return for Season 19.
There’s also no word on whether the other Season 18 cast will return for Season 19, but most of them are expected to.
Kelly McCreary played Dr. Maggie Pierce, Caterina Scorsone played Dr. Amelia Shepherd, Jake Borelli played Dr. Levi Schmitt, Chris Carmack played Dr. Atticus Lincoln, Richard Flood played Dr. Cormac Hayes, Anthony Hill played Dr. Winston Ndugo, and Scott Speedman played Dr. Nick Marsh, are all cast in Season 18 that can be expected in Grey’s Anatomy Season 19.
