The worsening of relations between the United States and Russia has left both countries’ embassies and consulates short-staffed and unable to provide routine services, and the United States plans to expel at least 54 more Russian diplomats next year.
According to Russian Ambassador Anatoly Antonov, 27 Russian diplomats and their families will depart the United States by the end of January, and an additional 27 will depart on the 30th of June.

Moscow Claims That the United States Is Planning to Expel More Russian Diplomats
Russian diplomats and their families have been barred from the United States for more than a year now, following the deterioration of ties between the two countries following Washington’s accusations of Moscow’s interference in the 2016 presidential election.
The U.S. State Department has warned that the Moscow embassy may be forced to close because of a dispute over visas.
According to Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova, 55 Russian diplomats and employees are expected to leave the United States “in the coming months.” she stated.
U.S. diplomatic missions to Russia now employ around 120 people, down from 1,200 in 2017, after several rounds of tit-for-tat diplomatic expulsions. Meanwhile, Russia has around 230 people in the U.S.

Russia has added the United States to a list of “unfriendly” countries that must be approved before employing Russian nationals, in the midst of a long-running diplomatic dispute.
The U.S. Embassy in Moscow has been warned by the State Department that it may be forced to cease most of its operations by the year 2022. Russia was added to a list of countries where “the political or security situation is tenuous or uncertain enough” to prevent consular staff from processing immigrant visa applications last month, according to a statement from the State Department.
