The death of Robert Gordon, a prominent revivalist from the 1970s, at the age of 75, was confirmed by his record company.
VP Matt Green of Cleopatra Records authored the formal statement from the record label, stating that Gordon died on Tuesday.
“Our hearts at Cleopatra Records go out to his loved ones at this time. We enjoyed Robert’s powerful baritone voice and his dedicated approach to his music, therefore his departure is sad for us “The man communicated with Variety through the letter.
Neither Green nor Gordon’s family have commented on his passing, but a GoFundMe campaign was set up last month in the midst of his fight against an aggressive form of acute myeloid leukemia.
Gordon had to postpone his tour in July due to his illness, which was mentioned on the original fundraising page created by his family. Unfortunately, he has been in much worse shape in recent months.
As of this writing, more than 180 donors have helped the family raise $15,969. Whether or not AML contributed to his demise is still up for debate.
The American Cancer Society states that the cancer Gordon had originated in the bone marrow and then spreads to the rest of the body via the blood. Some of the other organs it can invade are the brain, spinal cord, liver, and spleen.
Gordon died a month before the release of “Hellafied,” the record they had been working on with British guitarist Chris Spedding.
In the wake of Gordon’s death, his admirers and coworkers paid tribute to him. Before the singer passed away, they also showed photos they had taken with him.
Robert Gordon’s Legacy
The singer, originally from Maryland, got her to start performing with local acts like Newports and Confidentials. In spite of being married at 19, he enlisted in the National Guard.
His family established a clothes business in New York City after relocating there in the ’70s. He got his start in the industry as a member of Tuff Darts, a band he joined after the local punk scene took off. On the 1976 album “Live at CBGB,” he famously contributed a segment.
After hearing Tuff Darts‘ rendition of “One Night,” Richard Gottehrer approached Gordon and suggested they make a rock CD. The next year, in 1977, he released his debut album, “Robert Gordon with Link Wray,” followed by another album, “Fresh Fish Special.”
Gordon’s “Rock Billy Boogie” was his first single after he signed with RCA.
Several albums, including “Rockabilly for Life,” “All for the Love of Rock ‘N’ Roll,” “Satisfied Mind,” and “It’s Now or Never,” featuring his distinctive brand of rockabilly and blues, were released before his untimely passing.
