Scream 6: Nearly three decades after horror maestro Wes Craven stunned viewers and critics alike with his irreverent take on the film 1996’s Scream,” its sequel followed suit, quieting critics and appeasing nostalgia with its celebrated relaunch of the franchise in January 2022, achieving a respectable 76 percent Certified Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

A few things to know about Scream 6

Scream 6

“Scream,” directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, was a massive box office hit, grossing over $139 million at the international box office, just like its eponymous and late-’90s predecessor (via Box Office Mojo).

Unlike the original, it has a built-in fanbase, which the new picture thoroughly exploits by bringing new and old faces to the familiar tale. To appease this fandom, even more, a sequel to the requel (or, as we like to call it, a requel-sequel) is in the works.

Scream was the first big smash of the 2022 film season. The movie scream 6 has received positive reviews from critics and fans of the franchise alike, and it has grossed approximately $140 million worldwide. Because of the success of Scream 5, a sequel was immediately approved, and fans now know when they will be shouting once more.

Here’s all we know so far about Scream 6.

What Will Scream 6 Be About?

Given that one of the franchise’s stars had yet to read the script at the time of her recent interview, and no official plot summary has been released, there’s a lot we don’t know about how “Scream 6” will advance the masked slasher story.

Nonetheless, a lot may be assumed when it comes to a film of this sort. There will certainly be a spree killer wearing an Edvard Munch-esque white mask, and survivors from previous films will (supposedly) alternate between teaming up and turning suspiciously on one another as the assailant closes in on their victim.

Finally, most viewers will be surprised by the killer’s identity, except for that one friend who always predicts it 10 minutes into the film.

Though it is impossible to foresee how the plot will unfold, considering “Scream” 2022’s overarching homage to the original, it may be fascinating to explore the plot of “Scream 2” to see what the follow-up could potentially be about.

In the original sequel, a copycat killer terrorizes the citizens of Woodsboro, California, after a film based on the first film’s events is released. Mickey, Sidney’s movie-obsessed friend, is revealed to be one of the murderers.

Mickey is played by Timothy Olyphant, who looks like Skeet Ulrich. Mrs. Loomis, the original killer’s mother, is also revealed to have begun her vengeance plan immediately after her son was killed in “Scream.”

The cast and characters in Scream 6

The news on the next edition should be rising, and hopefully, word of Neve Campbell’s Sidney Prescott’s return is just around the corner. Given their major roles in the previous film, Melissa Barrera’s Sam Carpenter and Jenna Ortega’s Tara Carpenter will almost probably return.

Especially Barrera’s Sam, who was revealed to be Billy Loomis’ daughter. Loomis, of course, was one of the original Ghostface assassins in the 1996 film.

While we wait for more information, fans of this legendary horror franchise can binge-watch the fifth great film to their hearts’ content. It’s now available to stream on Paramount+ and digitally, and it’ll be released on Blu-ray on April 5.

Release Date

It was recently announced that “Scream 6” will be released on March 31, 2023. (Source: Deadline). Those looking forward to the next episode of the meta-and-rule-breaking thriller will be relieved that it is only a little more than a year away.

In some ways, the sequel’s trigger-happy timing respects the film’s heritage.

As longtime fans recall, the movie Scream 2 was rushed into production immediately after the first film was released in theaters, with the first film premiering in December 1996 and the sequel following in December of the following year (via IMDb).

Of course, capitalizing on the success of a successful slasher has certain advantages. “Scream 2” may not have impressed moviegoers as much as its predecessor. Still, in the immediate aftermath of the original’s groundbreaking take on the slasher, critics were more aware of what they were watching and what to expect.

On Rotten Tomatoes, the sequel has an astounding 81 percent reviewer score, the highest in the “Scream” trilogy.

Without question, the use of various “Scream” legacy characters is a big part of what makes the new requel so appealing to original fans. Many people wonder how many of the characters from “Scream” 2022 will return in the next film. The film also introduces many new characters, both masked and unmasked.
