Why was Station Eleven written?
Miranda’s work on the graphic novel is a way for her to process the trauma she endured as a child. During Hurricane Hugo, she witnessed her entire family perish when a live wire fell into their flooded home. She was coloring while sitting on top of a countertop, which saved her life. In her case, art truly saved her life, and this becomes an important theme throughout the series.
Miranda, Kirsten, and Tyler appear to interact with Dr. Eleven, Miranda’s graphic novel’s spaceman protagonist, throughout Station Eleven. During his initial interactions with Miranda in the dystopian Station Eleven, Arthur stated that her character represented someone who was alone, but not a spaceman. They’re disoriented and exhausted.
Their hearts are lighter and warmer than they realize, and they are wearing the suit to protect themselves. Miranda does not agree with his assessment, but she warms up to him and eventually joins him at the bar. Miranda probably sees Dr. Eleven as a reflection of herself, and what Arthur said made her feel good about herself. He made her feel noticed.
