Alexi Hawley created the American police procedural crime drama television series The Rookie for ABC. The series follows John Nolan, a man in his forties who joins the Los Angeles Police Department as the department’s oldest rookie.
ABC Studios and Entertainment One produced the show, and it is based on real-life LAPD officer William Norcross, who came to the city in 2015 and joined the force in his mid-40s.
The stars in the series are Nathan Fillion, Alyssa Diaz, Richard T. Jones, Titus Makin Jr., Melissa O’Neil, Afton Williamson, Eric Winter, Mekia Cox, Shawn Ashmore, and Jenna Dewan.
The show follows John Nolan, a small-town guy chasing his dream of becoming an LAPD cop after a life-changing experience. He’s treated with suspicion from some higher-ups who perceive him as a walking midlife crisis.

The Rookie, starring Nathan Fillion and created by Castle executive producer and co-showrunner Alexi Hawley, received a straight-to-series order from ABC on October 26, 2017.
Mark Gordon, Nicholas Pepper, Michelle Chapman, and Jon Steinberg serve as executive producers alongside Fillion and Hawley. The series launched on October 16, 2018, produced by ABC Studios and The Mark Gordon Company.
The Rookie got picked up for a full season of 20 episodes on November 5, 2018. The sitcom was revived for a second season by ABC on May 10, 2019, and it premiered on September 29, 2019. The series was renewed for a second season on October 28, 2019, with a full season order of 20 episodes.
ABC renewed the sitcom for a third season on May 21, 2020, broadcast on January 3, 2021. After season 3, ABC renewed the sitcom again for a fourth season on May 14, 2021, then premiered on September 26, 2021.
