Thor Love and Thunder: It’s been five years since the release of Thor: Ragnarok. The good news is that the sequel is not only just a few months away, but there is also a first teaser trailer for us to enjoy.
The first trailer shows a soul-searching Thor seeking assistance from the Guardians of the Galaxy. There’s a glimpse of Russell Crowe’s Zeus and a certain Jane Foster carrying Mjolnir and Natalie Portman making her triumphant return to the MCU.
Everything else you need to know about Thor Love and Thunder is right here, from who in the cast to the inside scoop on that trailer and everything else you need to know about the plot. Scroll down to learn everything you need to know about Thor Love and Thunder before it hits theaters in July.
Thor Love and Thunder Plot
Along with the first teaser trailer for the film, an official synopsis has been released.
The synopsis states that “the film finds Thor (Chris Hemsworth) on a journey, unlike anything he’s ever experienced—a quest for inner peace.” His retirement, however, is broken by a galactic killer known as Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale), who wishes to destroy the gods.
To combat the threat, Thor enlists the help of King Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), Korg (Taika Waititi), and ex-girlfriend Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), who wields Thor’s enchanted hammer, Mjolnir, as the Mighty Thor, much to Thor’s surprise. They embark on a risky cosmic adventure together to discover the secret of the God Butcher’s vengeance and stop him before it’s too late.
Another plot point will be Valkyrie’s search for a partner to lead New Asgard with. She is the monarch. “If she can’t find her queen, she’ll just be king and queen simultaneously,” Thompson remarked in an interview with ET.
For the time being, everything else is just speculation. But, as the adage goes, you have to speculate to accumulate, and given how closely Love and Thunder appear to be following key story threads from Jason Aaron’s run on Mighty Thor, it’s worth looking ahead.
File this under “hopes” rather than “facts,” but Jane Foster’s return does suggest a few things. One, Thor is no longer deserving of the hammer. Nobody knows how it happens, but Jane took up Mjolnir on the moon in the comics, and she may do so again here. Another possibility is that she comes from a multiverse.
Thor Love and Thunder Cast
It should come as no surprise who is in the spotlight. Yes, Chris Hemsworth reprises his role as Thor, the God of Thunder. Valkyrie, the newly-installed monarch of New Asgard, is played by Tessa Thompson. But there’s some bad news for Loki fans: Tom Hiddleston will not be reprising his role.
Natalie Portman makes a surprise visit on stage at the 2019 San Diego Comic-Con. She announced her return to the MCU as Jane Foster, not just Jane Foster. This Jane Foster – whether she hails from a multiverse or not – will be the Mighty Thor, a plot device stolen directly from comic writer Jason Aaron’s renowned mid-2010s Thor run.
Portman has also just revealed that her character would be receiving cancer treatment. Take a peek at what the comics say about Natalie Portman’s Mighty Thor if you need a reminder.
Russell Crowe has joined the film’s cast and has indicated that he will play Zeus, so we can expect a lot of lightning if the two thunder gods meet face to face.
Jaimie Alexander returns as Sif, and additional MCU characters, such as Matt Damon reprising his role in Thor: Ragnarok, could be on the road. The actor portrayed Loki in Asgard. Sam Neil has also hinted at a possible cameo, having played Odin in the same production.
The film’s director, Taika Waititi, will also reprise his role as Korg. Following his debut in Thor: Ragnarok and a Fortnite-themed cameo against noobmaster69 in Thor: Ragnarok, the rock star will make his third appearance in Avengers: Endgame.
Chris Pratt will play Star-Lord, Vin Diesel as Groot, Karen Gillan as Nebula, Dave Bautista as Drax, and Pom Klementieff as Mantis in the Thor Love and Thunder film. Rocket Raccoon is also present and accountable, so we may assume Bradley Cooper is. Once again, the Asgardians of the Galaxy ride.
Who else is there? Hemsworth and Waititi were spotted with Jeff Goldblum in Australia. Melissa McCarthy has also been spotted on set, playing an Asgardian in Cate Blanchett’s Hela’s role.
Christian Bale has agreed to play Gorr the God Butcher, who played a key role in Jason Aaron’s tenure as the guy who wiped off deities across time and space.
For the sake of Odin, he effectively became Marvel’s Kratos. What’s not to appreciate about that? Our first glance of Bale in costume has emerged on the internet, thanks to some set photos, and he’s looking somewhat humorously realistic. A recent LEGO kit provided an even better look at the villain.
It is a legitimate escalation for Thor – god-killers can undoubtedly compete with Thanos in terms of strength – but it’s also an appealing concept given how much inspiration the film appears to be borrowing from the pages of the comics.
Thor Love and Thunder Release Date
