What is Under the Banner of Heaven about?
The limited series Under the Banner of Heaven is based on a novel with the same title. Oscar-winner screenwriter Dustin Lance Black will write it. But not only that, but he will also serve as an executive producer on the project.
In a statement via a press release regarding the series, Black shared that he is excited that the project is finally getting this on its feet. He said, “After so many years of work, I’m incredibly grateful to Imagine and FX for their patience with and commitment to bringing this story to screen. Raised in the LDS faith, I hope that this true-crime thriller might shed light on the horrific brutalities perpetrated in the name of God in our backyards.”
Under the Banner of Heaven: Plot
The film’s story explains how a devout detective’s faith is tested by investigating a brutal murder that appears to be connected to an esteemed Utah family. The family came out to be someone who spiraled into LDS fundamentalism and distrusted the government.
The series is a true-to-life story based on a real-life double murder that occurred in 1984 and is adapted from Jon Krakauer’s nonfiction book.
Krakauer’s book investigates this gruesome murder committed by the Lafferty brothers, as mentioned, including the events which led to its occurrence.
The series will also explore the history of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the culture formed around the church.
Although it is unclear if the FX adaptation of Krakauer’s book will expand its focus in the same way, we can assume the possibility that at least some of Krakauer’s findings could be in the series and be able to retell the murder story.
Under the Banner of Heaven: Official Release Date
Although the creators have already released a trailer, we do not have an exact date of its release yet.
Although we know that it will be released this year, not just sure when. Based on the filing and production timeline, we are guessing that it might be ready for airing by mid of 2022, based on the filing and production timeline.

One of the most exciting things about the series is its cast. Two solid and eminently watchable talents join the Under the Banner of Heaven miniseries.
Andrew Garfield and Daisy Edgar-Jones will be portraying important roles in the miniseries.
The Oscar-nominated Andrew Garfield will play Pyre, who is described as “an LDS elder who is committed to his Church and family but begins to question some of the Church’s teachings through his contact with a suspected murderer.”
On the other hand, Daisy Edgar-Jones will play Brenda, “a young faithful Mormon who is the victim of a brutal murder.”
