Philip David Charles Collins LVO was born in Putney Hospital in southwest London on January 30, 1951.
Greville Philip Austin Collinsmand and Winifred June Collins are his parents.
Collins is the youngest of three children; his sister Carole is a professional ice skater who works as a theatrical agent, and his brother Clive is a well-known cartoonist.
By the time Collins was two, the family had relocated twice and settled at 453 Hanworth Road in Hounslow, Middlesex.
When he was five, he was given a toy drum kit for Christmas, and his two uncles later made him a suitcase-sized set out of triangles and tambourines.
