With his cult classic family film Spy Kids, director Robert Rodriguez had audiences flocking to the box office. Antonio Banderas, Danny Trejo and Cheech Marin lent their star power to this beloved 2001 action comedy; interestingly enough, it’s also renowned for launching the careers of Alexa PenaVega and Daryl Sabara. The movie follows Carmen Cortez (PenaVega) and her brother Juni (Sabara) as they battle against Fegan Floop( Alan Cumming), the evil mastermind behind a popular children’s show, to rescue their parents (Banderas & Carla Gugino).

After amassing an impressive $150 million at the box office, the Asset Bairns franchise spawned three sequels – Asset Kiddies 2: The Islet of Lost Dreams, Spy Kids 3-D Game Over and Spy Kids All the Time in the World, as well as 2018, rebooted TV show entitled “Spy Kids Mission Critical”.

Alexa PenaVega

PenaVega is no stranger to the entertainment world, with a decades-long resume. She famously brought Carmen Cortez to life in Spy Kids and starred in Sleepover, Repo! The Genetic Opera, Machete Kills (reuniting her with her original director) and Dancing With the Stars – to name a few. More recently, she has been seen playing Carlota on The Casagrande’s from 2019-2022 and continued being part of the beloved Spy Kids franchise by appearing in all three concluding films.

Daryl Sabara

Sabara portrayed the iconic Juni Cortez in the film. He then lent his voice to Ultimate Spider-Man, Ben 10, and Marvel’s Avengers Assemble. Additionally, he made guest appearances in Wizards of Waverly Place, Weeds and Criminal Minds. In 2010 Sabara reunited with Robert Rodriguez and stars Danny Trejo and Alexa Marin for Machete – a role met with critical acclaim from fans worldwide. In 2018, actor John Carter said “I do” to the talented artist Meghan Trainor before they welcomed their son Riley into the world in 2021. Director Robert Rodriguez made a name for himself with his cult classic family movie Spy Kids, which starred Antonio Banderas, Danny Trejo and Cheech Marin – three of Robert’s frequent collaborators. Alan Cumming

From 2016 to 2021, the U.K.-born actor was the face of Eli Gold in The Good Woman and Fegan Floop in Spy Kids 2 and 3-D. Besides that, he starred in Reefer Madness, Burlesque, and Tempest. Not only has Cumming appeared on television series such as Web Therapy and Broad City, but he is also an accomplished author, having published two biographies, a novel and two children’s books! In 2012 cummings married illustrator Grant Shaffer after entering into a civil union five times before tying the knot with him.

Antonio Banderas

Antonio Banderas, renowned for his titular role in Interview With the Vampire and swooned over for The Mask of Zorro, also lent his voice to Puss-in-Boots from the Shrek series. His partnership with Robert Rodrigues has produced several films such as Desperado, Four Apartments, Once Upon a Time in Mexico and ending with Machete Kills, where he played Gregorio Cortez – head of the family.

In 2020, Antonio Banderas earned his first Academy Award nomination with his performance in Pedro Almodóvar’s Pain and Glory. Before the accolade, he had ended his marriage 2015 with his ex-wife Melanie Griffith. He is now a stepfather to their daughter Dakota Johnson whom Griffith shares with her husband, Don Johnson.

Carla Gugino

Gugino delivered a powerful performance as the matriarch of Carmen, Juni and Gregorio’s family. Since her appearance in Spy Kids, she has acted in an array of films, including Night at the Museum, Watchmen, American Gangster and San Andreas – collaborating with the Spy Kids director again for Sin City in 2005. Her television credits include several Netflix horror series, such as The Haunting of Hill House, Gerald’s Game and Bly Manor, showcasing her unrivalled talent.

Cheech Marin

Hilarious actor George Marin uniquely portrayed the character of Felix Gumm as an OSS agent pretending to be Carmen and Juni’s uncle. After his role in the first two Spy Kids movies, he went on to star in Once Upon a Time in Mexico, Christmas With The Kranks, Machete, Coco and Bus 3. He has also been seen on popular television shows such as Grey’s Anatomy, Lost, Jane the Virgin and Home Economics.

Marin and his former wife, Darlene Morley, share one child despite their disassociation in 1984. He also has two children with his ex-wife Patti Held. In 2009 he tied the knot to pianist Natasha Rubin while Sucker Punch actress Miranda Richardson has been dating Sebastián Gutiérrez since 1996.
