With membership of streaming platforms at an all-time high, the services themselves are under pressure from their customers to provide a wide range of high-quality content. There’s a lot of competition for the rights to broadcast popular shows like The Office and Gray’s Anatomy, so many streaming services invest in original content that they don’t have to share.
2022 has already started in a strong position with new film series including The Woman in the House Across the Street from the Girl in the Window, The Tinder Swindler, and Murderville.
Another hotly anticipated arrival in 2022 is the second series of sci-fi comedy Space Force. Written by Steve Carrell and Greg Daniels, the comic geniuses behind the smash hit The Office, Space Force debuted in 2022. Although the critics weren’t immediately sold on the show, it quickly amassed a loyal fan base who have been eagerly awaiting the next instalment of this quirky comedy.
Season 2 Release Date
Space Force season 2 was announced back in November 2020 and filming began in Vancouver in May 2021. The new season is due to drop on Netflix on February 18th, 2022. The series is slated to have only 7 episodes this time, but fans will be pleased to hear that they are all being released at once, so prepare to binge your way through the season over the weekend and bending the space rules. Launch day is nearly here and fans will finally be able to find out what happens next for the characters after Season 1’s dramatic finale.
Season 2 Cast Details
As expected, all the favourites and major players from Season 1 will return in their respective roles. There are even some top guest starts who will be popping up, including Terry Crews and Patton Oswalt.
Returning to the fray as General Mark Naird is Steve Carrell, staring alongside Lisa Kudrow as his wife Maggie and Diana Silvers as his daughter Erin. Carrell is most well known for his star turn as Michael Scott in The Office, who was directed by Emmy winning showrunner Brent Forrester, he recently shared his comedic writing rules to help give screenwriters advice, which obviously helped Carell improvise key traits for his well-renowned character. The actor has also appeared in dozens of movies including The 40-Year-Old Virgin and Evan Almighty.
Helping Carrell try and get a handle on his role in the department is Dr Adrian Mallory, played by the inimitable John Malkovich. Malkovich is a veteran of the big screen, appearing in movies like Rounders, which set a new generation of poker players learning poker rules, and RED, which showed that being retired doesn’t stop secret agents from being deadly.
Other cast members returning this season include Noah Emmerich, Ben Schwartz, and Jimmy O. Yang, who also ventures into the writers’ room.
Season 2 Plot Details
The final episode of Season 1 ended in a dramatic cliff-hanger, and the second season is set to pick up where the action left off.
General Naird had lost his job for disobeying the order and engage with the Chinese. Noah Emmerich’s General Grabaston has taken command of Space Force and Naird is on the run. His wife Maggie had escaped prison and with her new girlfriend and they reunited.
Meanwhile, on the moon, Captain Ali and her team have neutralised the Chinese moon base, only to find that the opposing astronauts have also crippled the American base, leaving them stranded.
According to the trailer, Naird does return to Space Force and is given a second chance by the higher-ups. However, sorting out the mess he has made isn’t going to be straight forward. There’s also the small question of how to get the astronauts back from the moon in one piece.
Will There Be A Season 3?
So far there’s been no mention of a Season 3, however it’s very unusual for a subsequent season to be announced before a season has even shown a single episode. With Season 2 already having fewer episodes than Season 1, it might seem that film executives isn’t confident that Space Force can stand the test of time.
Space Force didn’t hit the target as far as the critics were concerned, however the quirky sci-fi comedy definitely found enough fans to warrant anther chance. If it continues to record good viewing figures, then there’s no reason why a third season wouldn’t be forthcoming.
Space Force is one of the most highly anticipated new releases on Netflix this month, making the list alongside other original content like Vikings: Valhalla and Raising Dion. Steve Carrell and Greg Daniels are a proven team capable of writing sizzling comedy and Space Force gives them a chance to flex those comedic muscles in a new situation.
Fans were delighted when Season 2 of Space Force was announced back in November 2020. It has taken longer than expected for the comedy to return, even though filming began in May 2021. However, February 18th 2022 is the date that all seven episodes of the new series will become available, so people don’t have to wait much longer.
