“We are heartbroken to announce the death of our beloved Gilbert Gottfried after a long illness,” the Gottfried family said. “In addition to being the most iconic voice in comedy, Gilbert was a wonderful husband, brother, friend, and father to his two young children. Although today is a sad day for all of us, please keep laughing as loud as possible in Gilbert’s honor.”

Gottfried had made a name for himself in South Florida with his piercing voice and frequently vulgar humor during the past few years.

Gottfried, born in Brooklyn in 1955, began his career in comedy when he was 15 years old, playing standup throughout New York City. “I bounced about those New York comedy clubs for years and years,” the comedian stated in his 2011 memoir, Rubber Balls and Liquor. “Occasionally, I climbed onstage and told jokes… Over time people started to laugh against their better judgment. I could only assume they were laughing at my jokes and not at me directly, but I was not about to question their laughter.”

A guest appearance on The Cosby Show in 1987 and a famous single-scene performance in Beverly Hills Cop II the following year were among those “one and another things,” the first of many brief roles in movies and television shows he would have in the decades to come. He co-hosted Gilbert Gottfried’s Amazing Colossal Podcast in recent years, and he was the subject of the 2017 documentary Gilbert.

Gottfried began working as a voice actor in 1992 with Disney’s Aladdin, in which he performed the evil parrot, Iago. “Gottfried is simultaneously one of America’s filthiest standups and one of the most successful voice-over actors in children’s entertainment,” Rolling Stone’s Mark Binelli said in 2005.

He had his first film debut in the infamous sixth season of Saturday Night Live when he only made a few cameos and only lasted 12 episodes. After a series of nearly entirely unscripted advertisements for MTV’s newly launched channel, he rose to prominence. By introducing audiences to what would become Gottfried’s signature comic persona, the advertisements helped launch Gottfried’s career in television and film.

“MTV started showing the crap out of those things, and people began to notice me,” he wrote in his memoir. One thing led to another — as it often does, I’m told — and before long, these many pursuits had taken on the shape of a career. “Or, at the very least, something resembling a job.”

He began doing amateur standup comedy when he was 15 years old.

After multiple performances on MTV and a brief stint as a cast member of NBC’s “Saturday Night Live,” he soared to notoriety in the 1980s. He did a lot of voice work for kids’ shows and movies, most famously as the parrot Iago in Disney’s 1992 animated blockbuster “Aladdin.”

Gilbert Gottfried as a Comedian

Indeed, Gottfried’s comedy courted controversy regularly, laughing at difficult issues or horrific events regardless of time or place. He is well known for cracking a joke about 9/11 three weeks after the events occurred during a roast (he won the audience back with an absurdly graphic take on the classic dirty joke “The Aristocrats”). He also voiced the Aflac Duck in commercials until 2011, when he was fired following a string of controversial tweets on the Tsunami and earthquake in Japan; Gottfried later apologized.

“I have always felt comedy and tragedy are roommates,” Gottfried subsequently wrote in a CNN op-ed. “If you look up comedy and tragedy, you will find a very old picture of two masks. One mask is a tragedy. It looks like it’s crying. The other mask is comedy. It looks like it’s laughing. Nowadays, we would say, ‘How tasteless and insensitive. A comedy mask is laughing at a tragedy mask.'”
