What is Insecure?

‘Insecure’ is a passion project from Issa Rae, co-created by Larry Wilmore. The Emmy-winning series premiered back in 2016, partially based on Rae’s web series, ‘The Mis-Adventures of Awkward Black Girl. ‘Insecure‘ began with eight episodes intent on delving into the love of two contemporary Black women, best friends Issa (Issa Rae) and Molly (Yvonne Orji). Friends since college, the twentysomething women were both struggling to navigate the complexities of their careers and relationships in South L.A.

The pair endure more than a few rough patches in their friendship along the way, but their bond holds tight and gives them guidance when all else fails. The dramedy also delves into various social and racial issues, but always puts the characters first. In addition to being clever and hilarious, ‘Insecure’ is also notable for its ever-impressive soundtrack. In fact, Solange Knowles served as a music consultant for the first season.

Season 4 ended on more than one cliffhanger, with major relationships left unresolved.
